This project will examine how inheritance and the transmission of property is managed and experienced in families and how it can affect people’s lives. What does inheritance tell us about financial support and families. We will investigate how it creates and constitutes kinship and intergenerational relations but we also acknowledge how it can reconstitute and reconstruct family relations. Moreover, the transfer of wealth between generations increases inequality, the transmission of property – who gets what and why – tells us something about divisions along gender, age, lineage and therefore it is essential for exploring power in families.
